Developing Independent Thought August 12, 2007

We’re up to our necks in research, Web 2.0 shenanigans and all the ideas we want to be ours but are already taken. It’s hard to just begin thinking out of the box, but here’s a step in the right direction (from one of my favorite self-improvement blogs): Five Ways to Develop Independent Thought

  1. Disconnect from sources of conventional thinking: think for yourself first, the plug-in
  2. Immerse yourself in experiences that conflict with your current perspective:challenge your views
  3. Watch the process from a distance: flies have such an advantage
  4. Randomize your sensory inputs: not only can this help you develop independent thought, but it’s just good for neurons, anyway.
  5. Practice disbelief: no one ever told you that being cynical is actually good for you.

This is a big aspect of our task, no?
